EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES & GOALS

Odontogenic infections are common and likely seen by members of every dental specialty. Delayed management can lead to progression of infection and significant morbidity for the patient. This lecture will review principles of management of odontogenic infections and case presentations on the management and treatment of patients with severe deep space infections

Learning points:

  • Understanding signs and symptoms of deep space infections
  • Understanding the anatomy of the fascial spaces of the head and neck
  • Understanding priniciples of medical and surgical management of odontogenic infections

Objectives:

  • For the clinician to recognize infections that can be treated in office compared to those which warrant higher level of care either from a specialist or hospital setting
  • For the clinician to have a heightened suspicion for the possibility of spread of infection to deeper spaces and deeper understanding of the sequelae of deep space infections

EDUCATIONAL METHODS

The planned educational program includes the use of a PowerPoint presentation, case reviews and a question and answer session.
